I’m sorry to admit that I’m not a huge Austrian cuisine fan. And I’m starting to feel like I’m not the only one. Bear with me for a second. While in my personal (and modest) opinion I believe that Italian food is the best in the world, I also believe that’s why our international food proposals aren’t as great as other cities. Look at cities like London or Vienna–their cuisine isn’t stellar (I’m being nice) but their international food offerings are top-notch. From Japanese and Chinese to Indian and Ethiopian, they have some amazing gastronomic proposals from around the world. While Italy is a bit behind (not on all cuisines), cities like Vienna have been attracting (thanks to their amazing services and standard of living) people from all over the world who have in turn opened up their own restaurants with spectacular offerings. So sure, go on and try a Wiener Schnitzel and a delicious piece of Sacher torte at the Sacher Hotel, but don’t miss out on these 7 amazing restaurants in Vienna, because they’re the reason I’m starting to warm up to the windy city. If you don’t have tim eto read my guide, here’s my quick guide to my favorite three restaurants in Vienna:
Chinacy – the Chinese restaurant in Vienna
I recently went to Rome to a Chinese dumplings place and oh my god, don’t even get me started on the difference I noticed between the quality of the same food in Vienna and Rome. It was crazy! Vienna’s xiao long bao dumplings were heavenly. If you’ve never tried Xiao Long Bao, they’re known as “soup dumplings”. They’re an explosion of flavor and I just can’t stop craving them. Definitely order them here, paired with ginger tea (the best I’ve had in my entire life).
Restaurant Nihon Bashi – proof that Japanese cuisine isn’t just sushi
Most people go to a Japanese restaurant and just order sushi and sashimi. God forbid they try anything else off the menu. That’s where Restaurant Nihon Bashi comes into the picture. While the sushi and sashimi are of exceptional quality, their warm plates will blow you away. Don’t even get me started, just trust me and make a reservation.
Ali’s Grill – a piece of Istanbul in Vienna
I’ve lived for four years in Istanbul, so you can trust me when I say when a Turkish restaurant is good or not. And if you want to taste top-notch Turkish food, Ali’s Grill in Vienna is the place to go to. As you step inside, Turkish music is floating in the background, the aromas of the spices are in the air and that warm feeling of Istanbul instantly wraps you up. Turkish cuisine is known for its meze selection, or hot and cold starter plates, and they’ve got the whole selection at Ali’s Grill! Just don’t forget to order something right off the gigantic grill to completely feel in Turkey.
