But did you ever stop to think about the region of Lazio as a whole? Probably not. Because most of you think the region of Lazio only offers the magnificent city of Rome as a playground. Well, I’m here to tell you otherwise. Lazio has some beautiful places, too! From the hilly countryside of the Sabine Hills to the agricultural paradise that is the Agro Pontino, all the way to beautiful lakeside retreats of Nemi, Martignano and Bracciano, to name a few. Don’t just come to Rome for a few days and flee to the other Italian regions for the rest of your trip. Lazio deserves your attention too, and trust me, it’ll be worth it.
So let’s go off to discover some of the gems of Lazio, starting from the agriturismi that dot this region. What’s an agriturismo? Agriturismi are agricultural establishments that produce their own food or source local produce while at the same time providing hospitality services. In short? They’re rural countryside escapes that offer accommodation, experiences, homemade food, local produce and restaurant services. I’m going to tell you about 4 of these agriturismi near Rome. But don’t expect luxurious establishments! It’s all about authenticity here, and these agriturismi in the Lazio region sure have a lot of it!
Agriturismi in Trevignano Romano: Acquaranda
Go on a day trip to Lake Bracciano and stop by Acquaranda, a farm stay with a view over Lake Bracciano offering a delightful restaurant with homemade produce. Have a tour of the agriturismo, they have sheep, cows and chicken! But the best part of this rustic agriturismo is the cheese! While you’re there, don’t miss out on the cheese-making workshop! Learn the secrets behind the cheese made in this award-winning establishment that distributes cheese and produce to over 40 shops and restaurants in Rome. They produce 250L of sheep milk per day and make amazing cheese from ricotta to the famous caciofiore of the campagna romana. If you want to go to their restaurant, it’s open on the weekend on Saturdays and Sundays. All the food is sourced from their vegetable garden, where only natural manure from the sheep is used, without any ong additives. It’s as natural as it gets!
Agriturismi in Lake Martignano: Casale Martignano
If you’re looking for some peace and quiet, Casale Martignano offers just that. This beautiful agriturismo right on Lake Martignano is paradisiac. They produce their own cured meats and cheeses, and source products from nearby agriturismi. They also have 9 apartments and 5 rooms for guests. Not to mention that sailing is one of their biggest activities! Walk down to the lake and enjoy a relaxing ride on a sailboat. Not into sailing? While the road to reach it is a bit crazy (call them and have them pick you up), the place is absolutely authentic! Picture rural houses, giant fireplaces, animals roaming around (just pigs, not to worry) and hunting dogs being bred. The best thing to do in Agriturismo Tenuta Monte La Guardia is definitely walking along its 200 hectares of forests. Unwind completely and explore the beautiful areas. From waterfalls to sunsets, there are so many beautiful sights to see. And for dinner? Their restaurant is amazing. Start with their homemade antipasi, followed by the delicious boar pappardelle. The desserts are absolutely fantastic.
Agriturismi in Bracciano: Agriturismo Monte La Puglia
Located near Bracciano, the Monte La Puglia agriturismo is the cherry on top of the cake. The lands have been in the hands of the same family from the 1600s, the Patrizi family from Siena! It’s surrounded by hills, sheep, animals that range from boars and pigs to chicken and guinea fowls. If you’re into horseback riding, they have horses and teachers to show you around.
