The most famous settings are in Maine, New England, New York and in particular Central Park and Japan (the phenomenon is called momijigari), but you can also observe it in parks and forests around Italy.
In this article we have selected for you the most suggestive places to admire the foliage in Italy.
In Liguria: in the Monte Beigua Regional Park
The Monte Beigua Regional Park in this period is transformed into a spectacular palette of warm colors. There are several paths that you can practice:
– the Deiva Forest in Sassello;
– ascend towards Forte Geremia da Masone;
– or go along the Archaeological Path that starts from Apicella.
There is space for everyone.
In Emilia Romagna among the Piacentini Hills
To admire the foliage in Emilia Romagna, the Piacenza hills are among the places that we recommend most. The province of Piacenza is perfect for organizing walks and outings. Some idea? The castles of Torrechiara, Castell’Arqauto and Vigoleno. Immediately after the harvest period, the leaves become an intense red-orange color, ideal for admiring the foliage and taking some pictures.
In Lombardy: in the Val Masino
For those who live in Milan and its surroundings, the place selected for you is the Bagni dei Masino Forest. A place that gives its best in the fall. With its 23 thousand hectares of land it will give you unique scenarios. The forest is easily accessible. Park your car at Bagni di Masino (Valtellina) and continue on foot. The Monza Park is also a valid and practical alternative.
In Puglia: in the Umbra Forest
In the heart of the Gargano, in the province of Foggia, it is possible to admire the foliage between oaks and maple trees. The Umbra Forest has a number of paths suitable even for children.
In Piedmont: among the Langhe
Between the provinces of Cuneo and Asti there is a wonderful hilly area which, in addition to its excellent food and wine, is perfect for observing the foliage. The peculiarity of this area is a slight mist that early in the morning acts as a natural frame for the red, orange, yellow and bronze colors of this period. The obligatory itinerary of this area is departing from Alba, passing through Monforte d’Alba then heading up to Serralunga.
Also in Piedmont I recommend the Oropa Botanical Garden in the Biella area.
In Trentino: in the Valle dei Mocheni
We know that Trentino offers world-famous landscapes in all seasons of the year. And even in this initial period of autumn he knows how to give those who visit him one of the most beautiful foliage in Italy. The best place to admire it is just 20 km from Trento: the Valle dei Mocheni. Here too there are several proposed itineraries as well as shelters that offer the gastronomic traditions of this region.
In Tuscany: in the Casentino Forest National Park.
How could Tuscany not be included among the selected places, where to admire the foliage in Italy?
The Casentino Forests in Tuscany, (province of Arezzo) allow you to observe this phenomenon. Reach the summit of Monte Penna above the Lama Forest to get a complete overview. In this area the shades range from yellow to purple.
In Calabria: in the Sila Nel Parco National Park
Nazionale della Sila, great for those who want to go trekking, the main actors of this show are beeches, maples and poplars. The recommended route is in the Sila Piccola that starts from Tirivolo and arrives at the vantage point near the Tacina river. In this period the park is rich in mushrooms and chestnuts.
In Valle d’Aosta in the Val Ferret
Val Ferret is known thanks to the ski slopes near Courmayeur but before being invaded by snow, these tracks turn into a warm-colored canvas in autumn. Even here in Val Ferret there is the possibility of hiking. You will find a nature and an excellent quiet for long walks.
In Campania: in the Monti Picentini Park
One of the best places to see the foliage in Campania is the Parco dei Monti Picentini in the Province of Salerno. In these parts the trees are mainly beech, maple and chestnut. Famous in this area is the Castagna di Montella IGP. The park extends between the province of Avellino and that of Salerno.
Admire the foliage in the train
One of the most unforgettable experiences concerning the foliage is to admire it while sitting on the train. The itinerary is between Switzerland and Piedmont, it is 52 km long and connects Domodossola to Locarno. In this section you will be able to admire landscapes “dressed” by the classic autumn colors thanks to the railway defined as the most beautiful in Italy: the Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway.
