If you want to see a spectacle of nature, you need to get yourself to the Garden of Ninfa, just over an hour drive from Rome. Not lured in yet? I’m not the only one to think so, the New York Times named the Giardini di Ninfa the “most romantic garden in the world”. Sounds like something you should visit, right?
Built in the 1920s by the Caetani family, the ruins of the ancient city of Ninfa serve as the backdrop to the 1300 species of flowers and plants. As the ecosystem is very delicate, the gardens are open just a few weekend days a year. My favorite time to visit is in springtime and autumn, when the colors of the garden change completely.
Originally, visitors would be taken through the garden with a guided visit of small groups. However, due to the covid anti-contagion measures, you’ll visit the gardens on your own. But the good news is that if you have any curiosities, you can ask the various guides along the path. Remember to book your ticket online in advance and bring your face mask and gloves. You must wear the face mask throughout the whole visit and practice social distancing. The staff members will also be taking your temperature at the entrance.
The Garden of Ninfa is surely one of the most beautiful gardens in Europe and was declared a Natural Monument by the Lazio Region in 2000. From water streams to cherry and apple trees that bloom in springtime, to stunning magnolias, birches and Japanese maples, you’ll find pretty much anything you can imagine in this garden.
Ninfa is located in between Norma and Sermoneta in the province of Latina. Head to one of the two beautiful hilltop towns after your visit for a nice lunch in the countryside.
